Are All Wigs the Same?

Wigs have long been an essential part of the beauty industry. Wigs allow celebrities and everyday people to quickly change their hairstyle without fear of damaging their natural hair. So, whether a person just wants to try a new style or is looking for a solution to thinning hair or hair loss, wigs can work magic.

Just as there are many ways to style a wig, there are also many different types of wigs. Natural or synthetic hair and a wide range of types and prices make wigs an incredibly versatile and convenient option for changing a hairstyle or dealing with thinning hair or hair loss. But all wigs are not the same.

Synthetic vs. Natural Hair

One of the first options you will encounter when looking at wigs is synthetic or natural hair. The difference between the two is the type of fiber used, and each has its specific benefits.

While wigs made of synthetic fibers are generally less expensive than natural hair, they can be better at holding their style and can be worn right out of the box. The wave, curl, and volume of synthetic fiber are permanently set, making it easy to style into place with minimal effort. Synthetic wigs can even withstand bad weather without drooping or frizzing.

Wigs made of natural human hair offer the most natural look and feel. While they are typically more expensive than synthetic wigs, they are also more durable. A human hair wig can be washed and styled just like your natural hair. Natural hair wigs are made from real human hair, so they look and feel real, a characteristic not easily duplicated by synthetic fibers.

Natural hair doesn't have the same memory as synthetic fibers. Therefore, wigs made from natural hair must be washed and restyled just like your real hair. Natural hair wigs can be expensive, with the costs varying depending on who makes them, and the type of hair used. While synthetic wigs may be less costly and easier to maintain, their lifespan may be as short as a few months. By contrast, a human hair wig can last for years with proper care.

Types of Wigs

Ready-Made Wigs

Ready-made wigs are often found at local beauty salons and hair vendors. Typically, they are synthetic, pre-styled wigs that can be adjusted to fit your head. A ready-made wig can be worn straight from the box and is a budget-friendly option if you have limited disposable income.

Lace-Front Wigs

Lace-front wigs are usually made with human hair and have a closure sewn on the piece near the crown. Following the initial piece, tracks are added, running from side to side. Due to the design, these wigs can usually be parted in only a couple of ways.

Full-Lace Wigs

Full-lace wigs usually use human hair and are made from a lace cap that is fully ventilated. A full-lace wig has versatility and can be parted in any direction, giving you nearly unlimited styling options. This wig is installed over your natural hair after braiding it with a small amount of adhesive glue around the perimeter.

Custom Wigs

As the name suggests, custom wigs are handcrafted for one specific person. This type of wig is constructed by a professional who first creates a base fitted to your unique head. They then meticulously attach the hair of your choice to create the look that best suits you.
