Trichotillomania and Your Teen: The TLC

Jul 7, 2014

2 min read

This post is the sixth and final post in a six-week series on Trichotillomania and Your Teen. Through education and comprehension, families can begin to address the disorder and get access to assistance and support.

The Trichotillomania Learning Center (TLC) has been mentioned consistently in this Trichotillomania and Your Teen series, and it is not by chance that we are featuring the Center in our 6th and final post. New Look Institute is a proud supporter of the TLC, a national non-profit founded in 1991, that has played a massive role in the spread of Trich information over the last couple of decades, providing not only education to the masses, but resources to professionals, support for parents, and community for those living with Trichotillomania. Guided by a Scientific Advisory Board and funded through memberships, publication sales, and donations, the TLC’s stated mission is “to end the suffering caused by hair pulling disorder, skin picking disorder, and related body-focused repetitive behaviors.” Their future vision includes quick diagnosis, widespread availability of knowledgeable and effective treatment options and support, and an end to the shaming of body-focused repetitive behaviors. They host conferences and training institutes, help connect interested participants with researchers, and their website (though they also have office hours and welcome communication!) is easily the most comprehensive online resource on Trichotillomania in the United States. If you have a question or are in need of help finding area resources, they are definitely your go to folks.

We leave you with this video, a fantastic example of the support, education, and responsiveness (this type of material was requested by teens for their dads) provided regularly by the TLC. Enjoy!

Over the last six weeks we have sought to understand Trichotillomania and covered its signs and symptoms, initial stepstreatments and solutions, and the stories of others. Thank you for joining us for this series as we explored some important facets of this challenging disorder. If you or your teen are struggling with Trichotillomania, do not hesitate to contact one of our specialists to begin your journey towards assistance and support today.
