Causes of Men's Hair Loss
Men's hair loss can be caused by various factors, though the most common by far is simple genetics. Indeed, male pattern hair loss is the root cause of the overwhelming majority of men's hair loss, and though there is no cure for it, there are certainly hair replacement solutions that really work. In other instances, men's hair loss can also be caused by medical conditions like scalp disorders, or even by medical treatments, including chemotherapy.
For millions of men across the world, hair loss is a fact of life. Sometimes it’s something that begins early in life, and sometimes the effect is delayed; regardless, many men will experience thinning hair at some point or another, and the effect of it can be psychologically devastating. Not only does it alter physical appearance, but it can also lead to a lapse in self-confidence and poise. The happy news for men everywhere is that hair loss does not have to be permanent. Hair replacement systems really work, and New Look Institute can provide them.
We are located in San Jose, California, but provide hair replacement solutions to men all over Silicon Valley. We’re known for our innovation in hair system design, but also for our personable, approachable style: our stylists really get to know each client, and provide them with solutions that are tailored to meet their lifestyle, budget, and hair needs.
The process begins with evaluating the real cause of hair loss—and here, there are several possibilities.
What Causes Men’s Hair Loss?
A little bit of hair loss is natural. In fact, most men will lose somewhere between 50 and 100 hairs every day, but the effect is usually not noticed, because new hair grows in its place. Problems occur when that rate of hair loss increases, or when the process of growing new hair is stalled.
For the majority of men faced with hair loss, the cause is genetic. In fact, hereditary hair loss—or male pattern baldness, if you will—is the cause of more than 90 percent of all men’s hair loss cases. You can usually identify hereditary hair loss by its pattern: men with this condition will lose hair at their crown, and also have a receding hair line, resulting in a U-shaped pattern of hair left around the head.
Though male pattern baldness is by far and away the most common form of male hair loss, it is hardly the only one. There can also be medical factors. It is well known that chemotherapy and radiation treatments can cause hair loss. Additionally, many medications can contribute to hair loss. These include common drugs taken for heart disease, arthritis, cancer, and more.
Stress and anxiety disorders can sometimes lead to hair loss, as well. The most common example of this is trichotillomania, a stress disorder that causes one to twist, pull, or even chew their own hair, leading to potential scarring and follicle damage.
Alopecia can also be a factor in hair loss. There are several different kinds of alopecia, but the most familiar is alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease in which the body actually attacks its own hair follicles, leading to patchy hair loss all over the body. Alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis are alternate forms of this condition, and these too can lead to hair loss.
It is also possible for hair loss to stem from issues with the scalp—including scalp rashes, allergies, and other diseases of the skin. Improved hygiene can often mitigate these conditions, but sometimes more specialized, topical solutions are needed.
